“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” John 17:6.
The Lord is not talking about manifesting (to uncover, reveal) God’s name to the disciples for their salvation, nor to prove to them who He was; rather this means that Jesus had shown the disciples the Father.
“… [Jesus is] the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person…” Hebrews 1:3a.
As we have seen in other studies, Jesus came to reveal the Father to mankind as well as to be a sacrifice for sin.
“God, who at various times and in different ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:1-4.
According to a list put out by, Blue Letter Bible entitled Blue Letter Bible, Names of God in the Old Testament, there are some sixteen names of God. See blueletterbible.org/study/misc/name_god.html>.
El Shaddai, Lord God Almighty:
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:15-18.
El Elyon, the Most High God:
“Then they [Israel] remembered that God was their rock, and the Most High God their redeemer.” Psalm 78:35.
“Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, ‘Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here.’ Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire.” Daniel 3:26.

Yahweh, the covenant name of God:
“Then Moses said to God, ‘Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they say to me, “What is His name?” what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” Exodus 3:13-14.
“[Jesus said to them] Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” John 8:58.
Jehovah Nissi, the Lord my Banner:
“And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord [YHWH]-Is-My-Banner…”Exodus 17:15.
Unger’s Bible Dictionary calls the Banner “A memorial to posterity of the gracious help of God (YHWH, or Yahweh if you prefer).
The incident commemorated was that of the defeat of Amalek which was accomplished only as long as Moses held up his hands, good read, see Exodus 17.
The American flag (or any country’s flag) too, is a banner, a reminder of our history, freedom, and the cost of maintaining that freedom. It is who we are as a people.

Jehovah Rapha, the Lord that Heals:
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me [Jesus], because the Lord [YHWH] has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [YHWH]…” Isaiah 61:1-2a.
See Luke 4:16-30 to see where this is quoted by Jesus.
“And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.” Luke 6:17-19.

“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord [YHWH] is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” Hebrews 13:5-6.
Jehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord our Righteousness:
“But indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law [or good works], but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith…” Philippians 3:8-9.
Jehovah Mekoddishkem, The Lord who sanctifies you:
“By that will [God’s will] we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10.

“I and My Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, ‘Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?’ The Jews answered Him, saying, ‘For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.’” John 10:30-33.
Elohim, God plural:
“In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1.
“In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” John 1:1-3.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14.
“And now O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” John 17:5.
Qanna, Jealous:
“When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, ‘Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!’ Then His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up’” John 2:15-17.
Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide:
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19.
“Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.” Matthew 14:19-21.
“And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. And they had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away.” Mark 8:6-9.
Jehovah Shalom, The Lord is peace:
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27.
Jehovah Sabaoth, The Lord of hosts:
“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You!” Psalm84:10-12.
“In the year that King Uzziah died [740 B.C.], I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’ And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: ‘Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.’” Isaiah 6:1-5.
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.” Revelation 19:11-14.
“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” John 17:6.
It has been noted before that Scripture tells us that.
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” John 6:44-45.
Jesus said, “They were Yours, You gave them to Me…” The disciples then were believers in God (Yahweh), the God of Abraham and belonged to Him before they came to Jesus as their Messiah. “Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.”
The disciples who trusted the God of the Bible were able to see Him in Jesus.
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life – the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us – that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:1-3.
