Dark, Deadly, Disaster, Genesis 6:12-13

“So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, ‘The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.’” Genesis 6:12-13.

It is possible that you or I would step out of a time machine into that world see the violence and say, “Wow, this is awful!” and would be in agreement with God.

However, it is hard for the average person to imagine a world so evil that it had to be destroyed. Yet, look at our present world, many folks say why does God not do anything?

Still the same folks will say, “Gee, here is an all knowing God who is supposed to love us, but when things were not to His liking he drowned everyone, men, women, and children!”

Bear in mind that these scoffers are people who want to believe what they want to believe. So they suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress [hold down] the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.” Romans 1:18-19.

“It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” John 6:45.

It is almost as if they were bragging about man’s contrary nature against God’s authority; sneering at Him as they did when His Son Jesus Christ hung on the cross.

“Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with the scribes and elders, said, ‘He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, “I am the Son of God.”’” Matthew 27:41-43.

Regardless, of what we think from our observations, it is God who is omniscient, and yes He did know that the world would sink in its own filth before the flood, but it was not as though He had not warned them for about 1,656 years.

When they had reached the tip over point where there was no going back and no remedy for the wickedness in the world, the evil cancer was removed.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9.

“Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel [or any man]?’” Ezekiel 33:11.

“The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. From the place of His habitation He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.” Psalm 33:13-15.

“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders [weighs] all his paths [habits].” Proverbs 5:21.

“The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one.” Psalm 14:2-3.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” Jeremiah 17:9-10.

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord, “And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:23-24.

“You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.” Jeremiah 32:19.

“For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps. There is no darkness nor shadow of death where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. For He need not further consider a man, that he should go before God in judgment.” Job 34:21-23.

In Genesis 6:3 God had warned the inhabitants of the earth through a preacher that it had only 120 years left to repent, before destruction.

If it was not Noah whom God had given this message to, it may have been another prophet like Methuselah or Noah’s father Lamech who had preached the end of the world for twenty years.

“And the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever…’” Genesis 6:3a.

As noted earlier, God had been working with mankind since the beginning. Above it states, “My Spirit shall not strive”, the Holy Spirit convicts the hearts of men as He spreads the word of salvation by the mouths of godly men.

“For ‘whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” Romans 10:13-14.

There had been preachers of righteousness since the days of Abel. One of them was Enoch who prophesied future events in the quote below.

“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’” Jude 1:14-15.

There was now one hundred years left to repent when Noah began to build the ark.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ…” Titus 2:11-13.
