“For by one offering He [Jesus Christ] has perfected forever those who are being sanctified [set apart]. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,’ then He adds, ‘Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’” Hebrews 10:14-17.
No longer is the law written on tablets of stone, but it resides in the heart of the believer. It is by the agency of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us that we are reminded of these things.
It is the Spirit who convicts our hearts concerning right and wrong. It is also the Holy Spirit who uses the word of God to lead us to greater sanctification and holiness. This is why the word of God is called living and powerful.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His [Jesus] sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:12-16.
According to Hebrew 10:14 quoted in the opening passage:
“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified [set apart].” Hebrews 10:14.
And in verse 17 it is added:
“…Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:17.
Then in verse 18 the conclusion is made:
“Now where there is remission [forgiveness] of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.” Hebrews 10:18.
The meaning here is that the Jewish sacrifices which were a type, or a picture of the true sacrifice of Christ, ceased to be effective after Christ died for our sins on the cross.
“And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.” Hebrews 10:11-12.
So then, the act of salvation is a permanent salvation in which God sees us as holy and blameless in Christ Jesus.
“And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight…” Colossians 1:21-22.
“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus…” Hebrews 10:19.
For those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their sacrifice for sin there is holiness, blamelessness, and the privilege of being seen as above reproach in the eyes of God.
There is also the responsibility of following Christ in His walk. Not that we can do that perfectly, but we can do it with a sincere heart, and confess our many failings (sins) along the way.
We are after all but flesh and blood. This is not an excuse, but a reason to be vigilant in our life down here.
“But if we walk in the light [by Jesus’ example] as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His [God’s] Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.” 1 John 1:7b-10.
So yes, we are holy and blameless in the sight of God through Christ, however that does not mean that we will not commit sin.
Surely everyone reading this will recognize the last statement in that sentence as being true, we all sin over the days. It is these sins, once we become aware of them, that we must confess to God as sin.
It is always good to keep a short list with God so that we do not fall into greater sin as they start to overwhelm us.
Whatever, whatever you do, if you have fallen into a morass of sin over the years, do not let Satan tell you that God is finished with you. If you have heard this condemnation in your heart, it is not God telling you that He is finished with you, it is the devil.
If you feel this way, it is time for you to confess to God that you have fallen, and call upon the name of the Lord.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16.
“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is His flesh…” Hebrews 10:19-20.
We do not enter the Holiest by our merit, but by the blood of Jesus; let us hold on to that thought.
“…and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience [by confession to God] and our bodies washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10:21-22.
“…and our bodies washed with pure water” means by the washing of the water of the word of God. By reading and meditating on God’s word in the Bible, this cleanses us.
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11.
“I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies [Scriptures] are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word. I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:99-105.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25-27.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day [rapture of the church] approaching.” Hebrews 10:23-25.
As for those who have not yet accepted Christ as their Savior, you are never so sinful that God will not hear you cry out to Him.
“And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21.
