Psalm 19:1-6

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.” Psalm 19:1-6.

Upon examining Psalm 19 you cannot help but be entranced by the glory and power of God.

It is my hope that I can convey the power and beauty of God as we go through it. While this psalm will be divided up into three posts it is nonetheless a single message to the believer.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1.

I believe that God’s glory is who He is, which is something that the Christian believer will truly understand when they stand before Him in heaven. It will then become clear why no man can see God and live.

Until then God has given us a glimpse of His glory through His creation and by His actions among men.

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?  For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:3-5.

Too often people look at the impossible myth of evolution and no further because they trust ungodly men with fancy letters behind their names.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1.

“The heavens declare the glory of God…”, how?

The heavens described here is the universe which is immense and filled with stars, galaxies, black holes, and many other curious anomalies such as pulsars which send out what arrives on earth as bursts of radio waves which are so accurate that they rival any clock.

God created everything with a function. This includes the things mentioned above and everything on earth. And everything in God’s creation is composed of atoms.

Great men have spent their lives trying to understand the cosmos with little or no success. They never see the glory of God in these complex perfectly balanced things in space because they were taught that it was all created by a Big Bang.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…” Romans 1:18-20.

Consider this, before the beginning there was nothing – nothing. What color is nothing, can nothing be seen or felt?

Even our universe with nothing in it would still not be nothing because it conducts light, gravity, radio waves and who knows what all.

So, here we have nothing hanging around doing nothing when atoms start to come out of nothing.

Atoms consist of protons which have a positive charge, and neutrons which have no charge, these two make up the nucleus. While the electrons which whizz around the nucleus at incredible speed have a negative charge.

It is the number of protons in an atom that decide what kind of chemical element that atom is 1 proton in the nucleus is hydrogen, or 2 protons in the nucleus is helium and so on.

Mix the right amount of oxygen with hydrogen and you have water, mix a mess of different chemical elements together and you have a cake.

Shuffle around amongst the Periodic Table of the Elements, pick out some that are compatible and build an aircraft carrier, or a star, all with the same basic atoms with a nucleus made of protons and neutrons, with electrons circling them. The only difference between them is the number of protons.

Humans are made up of a huge variety of elements which randomly came together to create a sentient creature that has a body, soul and spirit.

The Big Bang tells us that a universe of complete order was created through time, plus chance, plus the impersonal which brought about an explosion out of nothing – nothing!

What perfidy! A doctrine of demons that robs God completely of His glory.

“The heavens declare the glory of God”, the glory of God is in all His creation, from the atoms which make up elements, which join together to either make steel for buildings, or wheat for flour, or fill the cosmos with the beauty of God’s works. And God is in control of everything!

Hear Him:

“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion?
Can you bring out Mazzaroth [an unknown constellation] in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?” Job 38:31-33.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” This is the entire quote from Psalm 19:1. It is shown here because there is a difference between the words “the heavens” and “the firmament”. Having discussed the heavens as being outer space let us now consider “the firmament”.

In short, the word firmament simply means the air space around us, the atmosphere.

However, the Hebrews believed that the word firmament, or raqia in the Hebrew was considered to be solid and supported the waters above. If this is true it means we live in an ocean of air, much as we have an ocean of water on this earth. Firmament then always refers to our atmosphere as opposed to outer space.

To clarify the meaning of firmament see, “Waters are Waters, part 1” posted on 2-11-24, which is an answer to a question related to an earlier post on 8-19-21, “Waters Above and Below, Genesis 1:6-8”, this may help.

“He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the water in His thick clouds, yet the clouds are not broken under it. He covers the face of His throne, and spreads His cloud over it. He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, at the boundary of light and darkness. The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astonished at His reproof. He stirs up the sea with His power, and by His understanding He breaks up the storm. By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?” Job 26:7-14.

God’s word, His power, and His testimony that He exists reverberates throughout all His creation, and history.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.” Psalm 19:1-3.

The sun rises, we feel its heat, and in its light, we see birds, wonderfully made to fly through the firmament, then we see the bumble bee which technically should not be able to fly, flowers, green grass, blue skies, how can anyone miss this?

Rain stored up in the clouds which float through the firmament comes down to rejuvenate the earth. Thunder, and lightning are frightening, yet the lightning through a complicated chemical process creates nitrogen for plants, “…Day unto day utters speech”, God speaks to us through His creation!

“…night unto night reveals knowledge”, the sun goes down and darkness envelopes us, we look up and the glory of God spreads across the sky into an ever-changing picture as time moves toward daylight.

God speaks plainly throughout His creation and there is no language which speaks more clearly.

“There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” Psalm 19:3-4a.

From the elites seated in palaces to jungle natives no white man has ever seen, all are taught by God through their senses, the eyes, ears, touch, smell, and taste – no excuse for worshipping pseudo-science or dead wooden idols.

“Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle [tent] for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.” Psalm 19:4-6.

The beauty of God’s next statement again shows God’s glory in such a powerful way that it seems that words would fail.

“In them He has set a tabernacle [tent] for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.” Psalm 19:4b-6.

The power of the sun bursting forth in the morning as if from a dark tent, running its course from east to the west spreading the light all around chasing shadows away and spreading its heat to ease the chill of the receding darkness.

The strength of the sun in its passage across our horizons is compared to a “bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”

Have you ever run a race? Remember your focus as you drove your foot into the ground propelling you forward for the next powerful step kicking up dust, leaning forward, pumping your elbows as you took in your next ragged breath. What an exhilarating gift from God!

For those of you who, due to infirmities or age, are unable to do these things. The Lord Jesus will return soon and take all Christians to live with Him eternally in new bodies having tireless strength.

Remember these things when you see the sun running its race.

The sun has been placed exactly where it’s supposed to be in the galaxy and our orbit around it from 93 million miles away is perfect for our planet.

God’s intention was for the sun to be a blessing and a joy, but sin has brought into the world deserts, drought, death, and destruction. Soon every Christian, and every believer from Adam to the cross will witness and partake in the day when God is glorified by all of His creatures including all those in hell.

“And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Revelation 5:13
